Havelock
Havelock is a vibrant and historically rich precinct located in Singapore’s Central Region, within the Bukit Merah planning area. Positioned along the Singapore River, it seamlessly blends heritage landmarks with modern developments, offering residents and visitors a unique urban experience.
The area is well-served by the Havelock MRT Station (TE16) on the Thomson-East Coast Line, which commenced operations on 13 November 2022. This underground station, situated beneath Zion Road, enhances connectivity for the surrounding residential estates, including Bukit Ho Swee and Tiong Bahru, as well as commercial establishments like the Tan Boon Liat Building and Holiday Inn.
Historically, Havelock Road was named in 1858 after General Sir Henry Havelock, a British officer known for his role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The road has been a significant thoroughfare, running parallel to the Singapore River and connecting various parts of the city.
One of the notable heritage sites in the area is the Old Ministry of Labour Building, located at 3 Havelock Square. Originally serving as the Chinese Protectorate in the late 19th century, the building was later repurposed and currently houses the Family and Juvenile Court of Singapore.
Another landmark is The Warehouse Hotel, a boutique hotel housed in a restored 19th-century warehouse along Havelock Road. Completed in 1895, the building has undergone various transformations, including serving as a discotheque in the 1980s, before its current incarnation as a hotel that celebrates its industrial heritage.
The area also features the Alkaff Bridge, a 55-meter-long pedestrian bridge spanning the Singapore River at Robertson Quay. Built in 1997 and designed to resemble a traditional tongkang (bumboat), the bridge was later adorned with vibrant colors by Filipino artist Pacita Abad, adding a splash of artistry to the riverside landscape.
Havelock’s strategic location offers residents easy access to a plethora of amenities, including shopping centers like Great World City and Concorde Shopping Centre, as well as various dining and entertainment options along the riverfront. The integration of historical charm with modern conveniences makes Havelock a desirable locale for both living and leisure.
